Our small groups are small communities of six to twelve people meeting in homes throughout Nelson during the week. They are intentional gatherings that meet regularly for the purpose of joining God’s mission. They are also the heart of our church’s pastoral care network.
Our small groups are more than just Bible studies – they include prayer, worship, friendship, sharing what God is doing in our lives, spiritual nurture, accountability, and opportunities to creatively serve and impact the neighbourhoods in which they meet. In short, our small groups are for people who desire to be formed as Christ’s disciples in order to join in God’s mission.
What does it mean to join God’s mission? Jesus made this clear when he said:
“Love the Lord your God with all of your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: “Love you neighbor as yourself”. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” (Matthew 22:37-40)
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20)
These instructions from Jesus help us understand how a genuine disciple of Christ will live. We are to:
- Love God
- Love others
- Go and make disciples
Small groups are designed to help group members keep these priorities in focus. They are structured to help members grow through a balanced approach to discipleship that focuses on four areas:
- Heart (nurturing life-giving biblical community)
- Soul (cultivating a vibrant prayer life)
- Mind (growing in the knowledge and application of God’s Word)
- Strength (reaching out to practically bless and serve those around us)
